Congenital Syphilis for Primary Care Webinar

Syphilis in pregnancy results in very high rates of fetal morbidity and mortality and should be treated as soon as practical after diagnosis, often in the general practice setting. This session will assist you to provide syphilis screening to your patients, interpret syphilis serology and provide appropriate treatment. It will also allow you to ask any questions you may have in an interactive format.

Hosted by the Victorian HIV and Hepatitis Integrated Training and Learning program, this interactive session will discuss the current increase in syphilis across Australia and address emerging issues including syphilis infection during pregnancy and risk of congenital syphilis. The session will also include case based discussion to address the complexity of presentations of syphilis, including interpretation of test results and provision of treatment.

Learning Objectives:

• Understand the current epidemiology of syphilis in Australia, including local trends in syphilis infections in females of reproductive age
• Develop an understanding of screening, diagnosis and appropriate interpretation of syphilis results
• Be able to correctly treat syphilis in pregnancy, including identification of those at risk, treatment, partner notification, contact tracing and appropriate onward referral
• Understand potential sequelae of syphilis infection during pregnancy including congenital syphilis and follow up of infants
