This evening session will focus on the essentials of Hepatitis B and C diagnosis, management and treatment in primary care. It will cover the topics most practical to those working in the primary care setting: at risk populations (especially with clients of CALD community), modes of transmission, and management, including: risk assessment, screening, testing, diagnosis, and suitability and preparation for treatment.

Relevance to General Practice This informative and interactive training will aim to improve the confidence of general practitioners to effectively screen, treat and manage patients with hepatitis B and C and to apply the latest clinical information about anti-retro-viral therapy. Also discussed during the evening will be the process and requirements to become a GP HBV s100 Prescriber through the VHHITAL HBV s100 Prescriber Accreditation Program

Presenter:

This session will be facilitated by Dr Lester Mascarenhas. Lester is an experienced HBV S100 community prescriber, a general practitioner who works with refugees and asylum seekers. He not only works at cohealth Laverton and Your Community Health, but is also the founder of Utopia Refugee and Asylum Seeker Health, he leads the GP service in this non-government organisation at no cost to refugees and asylum seekers regardless of their Medicare status.

  • Describe the role of Primary Health Care in the management of Viral Hepatitis
  • Accurately determine at risk patients and screen for Viral Hepatitis
  • Confidently interpret Viral Hepatitis test results and discuss the treatment and referral options for the management of Viral Hepatitis
  • Discuss with patients the Viral Hepatitis treatment options and importance of regular monitoring
